.

The season is about to start, the greens are almost ready, the club has been refurbished and members are renewing their membership.  The 8 April is a day to pop into the club and renew memberships as well as catch up with fellow members.  Whilst there is no bowling prospective new bowlers are welcome to pop in and meet and chat with existing members.  2pm - 4pm - the bar will be open!

Winners of the Tomkins Cup...

A great win for Ampthill this year winning the indoor Tompkins Cup 2022-23....

Saturday 18th February saw the annual indoor match for the Tomkins Cup - a triangular event between Ampthill, Maulden and Flitwick Bowls Clubs.  A great afternoon was had by all, with the games played in a fine spirit of friendly rivalry, with a fantastic meal to follow.  Ampthill once again retained the trophy winning with 89 shots, to Maulden 71 and Flitwick 70.

The Ampthill team all performed well, with special thanks to Ivan Williamson and Michael Rogers who are not "indoor bowlers" and to Life Member, Les Bunn who travelled from Lincolnshire to take part in the game. The victory, whilst slightly unexpected, goes to show what strength in depth we have in the club, both indoors and outdoors.

HM Queen Elizabeth II 1926 - 2022 ...

Our thoughts today are with Queen Elizabeths II's family as they mourn the loss of a mother, grandmother and great grandmother, yesterday 8 September 2022.  The longest reigning monarch in the history of the United Kingdom, a Queen who pledged to serve her country from the day she became Queen when she was only 25 years of age, and at the age of 96, only 2 days before her death, she welcomed the new Prime Minister, Liz Truss, keeping her promise to do her duty until the end. Thank you for your service ma'am, may you rest in peace your Majesty.  God Save the King (King Charles III).

In Rememberence ...

WHEN I ROSE THIS MORNING ...

When I rose this morning the world was the same,

When I laid my head this evening there was a different reign.

Our Majesty The Queen has sadly passed,

During her seven decades she has remained steadfast.

A promise made at age 25 she has kept,

A dutiful life she has had to accept.

Alone she has been this past year,

Without her husband, her love, she has shed many a tear.

Once he had gone she appeared alone,

Still stoic but shaken to the bone.

Her passing has shocked her people,

It has left them feeling sad and feeble.

Her duty done until the last days of her life,

Through war, a pandemic and much family strife.

Now she can rest, her job is done,

Back with her love leaving the crown to her son.

God Bless you your Majesty

GOD SAVE THE KING

PIMMS, AFTERNOON TEA & BOWLS ...

What better combination is there than a beautiful sunny afternoon, a ice cold Pimms and a lovely homemade scone with fresh cream and jam - well that's the combination we had at the August Cameo club get together.  And what a great success the afternoon was, well attended by our members and also a few non members.  Definately a hard one to follow, or should we just do it all over again!

Winners of the Nin and Don Trophy 2022 ...

After a great afternoon of friendly competition at home the winners of the Nin and Don Trophy were Ivan Williamson and Tony Thompson, and the runners up were Nicolette Wade and Ian McEwan.   It was lovely to see old and new members playing together and two new members in the finals.  Well done to all that played.

Happy 90th Birthday ...

A wonderful celebration party was held at the club for one of our members, Jean Osborne, who celebrated her 90th birthday.  Surrounded by family and friends Jean had a wonderful evening catching up with members old and new.  Preceeding this the Jean Osborne Cup competition was played with many members taking part.  Patsy Dobson and Nicolette Wade made their way through to the finals with Nicollete taking the winning points.  A BIG congratulations to Jean on her 90th and Nicolette on her win.

Vera Babb Competition - July 2022

The Vera Babb Competition was held on Sunday on the most glorious of sunny days.  A most enjoyable time was had by all which went on until early evening.  The  eventual winners were Nick Warner-Smith, Patsy Dobson and Jenny Thompson who is one of our new members this season.

Presidents Update - June 2022...

The year so far has been busy for the Captains, the green team and the social committee. And what a good job they have been doing. Thank you to them all.

The club is having some Great results in competitions and Nicolette Wade particularly is showing the way. Men’s teams are holding their own in County League and a win at Linslade in the Top club last week was just brilliant for the club, we all played well but Martyn Read had a very good game against a good opponent and they had what I can only describe as the tightest head I have ever seen with three of Martyn’s woods within an inch of the Jack.

A mention must be made about Nick Warner Smith and his excellent cheese and wine talk at the May Social event, I must congratulate and thank Nick for coming forward and making a very enjoyable evening.   Well done to the Social Committee for organising.

Coaching is under way and Myself and Martyn are available for coaching Thursday evenings through June 5:30 – 7:30pm.  Old and new members welcome.

We had a visit from Bowls England’s  Alan Lane, Clubs & Participation Officer during our Taster session on Sunday. He met a few people that had been in the club and made good use of the bar on his way down and even video’d their opinions of the day! It was a glowing report of the friendliness and how much they had enjoyed the afternoon. Hopefully going to be followed up with applications for memberships.

First match of the Season ....

Members are really looking forward to the first home match of the season against Olney Bowls Club on Saturday 23 April, 2pm start.  Prior to this, Ivan Williamson, our President, will 'unveil' our new Sponsor sighnage and say a few words of thanks for their allegance to the club.  Thanks to Goff and his team the rinks are looking great, the whites are cleaned and pressed, we just need the sun to come out and it will be a perfect day.

Sunny Signing on Day ...

Ampthill Bowls Club were pleased to open their doors for the start of the bowling season last weekend. Members, old and new, enjoyed a sunny afternoon catching up with each other and chatting about the forthcoming season. Ivan Williamson, the Clubs' President, was also pleased to award Tony Lee his Top Shot award. Members also had a sneak preview of the new sponsorship boards that have been erected at the grounds. The season kicks off with a home match against Olney on 23 April, where the sponsors boards will be officially unveiled. Bowls Taster Sessions are being held on 12 and 29 May at Ampthill Bowls Club for those that would like to try their hand at this increasingly popular sport. SIGNING ON DAY 9 April 2022...

The clocks have gone forward, the daffodils are out, it can mean only one thing... signing on day is nearly upon us! We are very pleased to announce that we will be returning to a face to face signing on day this year, something that the pandemic put a stop to for the past two years.  A day when existing members and new members can drop into the club to sign up for the 2022/23 season, have the opportunity to catch up with each other and have a drink at the bar.  This year we will be asking members to use our brand new online rink booking and availability module, BowlR, which should make it alot easier and more convenient for members to let captains know their availability for matches aswell as being able to book a rink online.  We look forward to seeing everyone on the 9th April.

Quiz Night ...

The first of our monthly Friday night Social Events took place on the 25 March, a quiz with sausage and chip supper.  Thanks to our very own Colin Beal quiz master extrordinare for being the Quiz master and keeping everyone entertained.  It was lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves, a good night was had by one and all.  The next event is a Pasta & Pizza night with Bingo on Friday 29 April.

CAMEO CLUB ...

We had our first CAMEO (Come And Meet Every One) club on Wednesday and it went very well, and despite the awful weather it was very well attended, So a big thank you goes out to all those that did attend particularly Jean Osborne who came down in the pouring rain, getting soaked, on her mobility scooter.  A big thanks also to Patsy and Lynne for providing a cake and to Anne for helping with tea making and clearing up afterwards.  We will hold another CAMEO club event next month, hopefully we will have better weather and even more interest

Three Counties Radio ...

Listen out for Nicolette Wade on Three Counties Radio on Saturday morning on Sat 5th March at 8:45am talking to Ollie Bayliss about Ampthill Bowls Club.

Tomkins Cup Winners ....

Saturday the 26th February 2022 marked this years instalment of the much loved Tomkins Cup.  The competition saw holder Ampthill face off aainst Maulden and Flitwick in a rinks style match at Bedford Bowls Club.  Squads of 16 players, made up of both men and ladies players, played across 4 rinks.  With a mixture of indoor veterans and newbies alike.

After a fiercely contested battle, Ampthill emerged victorious, winning 3 of the 4 rinks and a winning margin of 14.  Skippered by Ian Burnage, the game chaning match was on rink 2, with Ampthill winning by over 40!

It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and stand in Captain, Nick Warner-Smith, lifted the trophy for Ampthill once again.

Well done to all who played, it was also great to see a couple of our Life members, Les Bunn and John Stocking, returning to play for the club.

CAMEO CLUB ....

We are keen to establish more of a social side to the club and with this in mind we are planning to establish a CAMEO Club (Come And Meet Everyone) for members, friends and family.  The idea will be to hold a variety of social activities such as Crafting, Art and hobby classes, Afternoon Tea, Bingo etc etc.  We are anticipating kicking this off with a Afternoon Tea in March where we will put together a list of activities that members, friends & family might be interested in, so keep a look out for further details.  If you would like to register your interest in any particular activitiy just drop us a line at enquiries@ampthillbowlsclub.com.

Games Night and More ....

We are busy organising a variety of Social events at the club, we are very keen to use the club more often throughout the year.  We kicked off with a Table Games Evening this month with a variety of games being played and a few scrumptious nibbles to help things along.  A very successful evening and a great kick start to the year.  We look forward to the next event in March, a Quiz night with Saugage and Chips to give extra brain power!

The Fisher Cup comes to Ampthill Bowls Club ...

Ampthill’s Captain Tom Tink  received the Fisher Cup from Steve Jennings at Maulden Bowls Club Annual Presentation Dinner. This nice trophy is awarded to the winners of the 3-way competition played over 3 weeks together with Flitwick BC - so plenty of banter (and rivalry!). Ampthill won after coming from behind in a close fought and enjoyable contest! Roll on the 2022 season.

An enjoyable Presentation Evening...

It was great to see a full clubhouse once again at the 2020/21 Presentation Evening.  Great company, sausage and chips and a quiz, made it a very successful and enjoyable evening, and a great end to a successful season.

End of Season has arrived ...

The final match has been played on the greens and work has already begun on preparing the green ready for the new 2021-22 season.

Annual Presidents Evening ...

Presidents Evening was a great success, an informal night with a Spider to start the evening off and then some Crown green played in the right spirit. Spider won by Martyn Read and Tom Tink in second place and the Crown Green won by Mike Oliver.

We raised £110 towards a De-fibrilator for the club in the Raffle.

Well done all and thanks for a very enjoyable evening

Whats App ...

We now have 46 members using the Club WhatsApp group, which is a very high proportion of our membership.  We hope everyone agrees that this group is very helpful for passing news of recent and upcoming matches quickly; general news about the club, the Green and requesting help for club maintenance andother activities; seeking markers, for singles matches etc - and of course, some Club banter, as that makes us all smile!

Not surprisingly though, some find so many messages a chore to wade through, so we have set up separate groups for the A and B teams, the Committee members and the Ladder Comp.  These are all working well.  To reduce the number of general posts we suggest using personal 1:1 texts or WhatsApp messages to arrange individual games etc if possible and the same when sending personal information such as address/telephone numbers.  Personal information will only be passed on for Club purposes, in accordance with the Data Protection Law.  Anything else we will seek members' permission.

We obviously understand if members don't want to be included in the WhatsApp groups, hopefully our 'buddy' system means that everyone receives the information that is being sent out as appropriate.

We are still considering trialling an online booking and match availability option via our website, and further news of this will be posted as and when available.

Annual Councillor and Business Chamber Match...

This annual event, which was sadly cancelled last year due to the Covid restrictions, is back this year on 1 July, 6pm.  We are looking forward to hosting this event againt this year and are sure that all that attend will have an enjoyable time.  The sky was blue, the sun shone and everyone had an enjoyable game of bowls.  We would like to thank all of the councillors that attended the evening and of course the members that also attended.

Fantastic response to the Bowls Big Weekend event...

What a fabulous response we had to our two Taster sessions in May and June, with over 25 people attending it was a very successful event.  Everyone enjoyed themselves and even the weather behaved itself!  As a result we have successfully recruited several new members all of which are now having their free coaching sessions.  Well done to all the members who helped, we had some excellent feedback.

Roll up for a Bank Holiday weekend of fun with bowls!

The Bowls’ Big Weekend is a national event taking place from Friday 28th to Monday 31st May, providing the opportunity for you, your friends and family to give bowls a go. Up and down the country bowls clubs will be opening their doors to people who want to try a new sport, have some fun and meet new people. All the clubs have been working hard to ensure all events are COVID secure and safe for everyone.

Once you register for your free session, you will receive notification via email and the relevant club will be informed. They then will engage with you to help ensure you have a fantastic time with them. All the clubs participating can be found by clicking the button below.

Ampthill Bowls Club are pleased to be taking part in the weekend with a Taster Session planned for 30 May 2021, 12noon - 4pm.  You will need to book for the session, which can be done by emailing enquiries@ampthillbowlsclub.com.  We very much look forward to welcoming you to our club.

Bowls Ladder is up and running ...

Once again we are running the Bowls Ladder as an internal competition, that will run throughout the 2021 season.

A seeded draw was made and the competition started as soon as the green opened on Good Friday, with 33 members competing.

It has been fantastic that so many of our new members have joined the ladder and hopefully they are enjoying the bowling and the opportunity to meet many of their fellow club members.

So far, 31 matches have been played, involving 24 of the players in the ladder.  The major change in the ladder this year, compared to the inaugural competition in 2020, is that the top 8 players at the end of August will enter a play-off phase, culminating in a final match on Finals Day in September.

Just a reminder to all ladder competitors - the only way to rise up the ladder is to challenge those above you - if you sit and wait for others to make challenges, then the only way is down !!

Happy Bowling - and make those challenges to improve your game and see some bowling friends, both old and new.

The season is underway ...

The season is underway, all be it limited to three a side. Our Captain this year is 2 for2 wins. The Green is bowling well and we are looking forward to the club opening up as Covid restrictions ease.

Keep an eye out for the Bowls England BIG WEEKEND at the end of May ( Bank Holiday weekend).

R.I.P. Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh ...

Our thoughts and best wishes are with Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal family following the passing of Prince Phillip, The Duke of Edinburgh on

Friday 9 April 2021.  The flags at the club have been lowered as a sign of respect.

Ready to play ...

The greens have been tended throughout the winter in anticipation of the start of the new season and at last it is here.  Fixtures are organised for the whole season with everyone hoping for 'normal' season this year.  Last year we had a very successful internal 'Ladder Competition' which we are implementing again this year and the first game has already been played.  Fingers and toes are crossed that the first fixture game of the season will be able to go ahead albeit under Covid rules and regulations.  So it's onwards and upwards, let the games begin!

Taster Sessions .....

We are currently planning two Taster sessions for those who would like to try out the game of Bowls.  Our qualified coaches will be on hand to give you guidance on how to play and answer any questions you might have.  Due to current Covid Regulations it is necessary to book a session in advance so we can ensure social distancing rules are abided to.  So why not give it a go, either complete the form on the Contact Us page, or email enquiries@ampthillbowlsclub.com for further information.  We look forward to seeing you soon!

Available dates are 30 Sunday 30 May and Thursday 24 June.

Preparations for the new season are well on their way ....

The new season is looming and the club is readying for what we hope will be something that resembles a Bowls Season.

The Green keepers have been working hard over the winter and the Green is nearly ready.

Of course it all depends on the Pandemic and how that is going to effect us, but we are preparing to social distance bowl at least at first and Bowls England will give us Guidance on how we proceed.

At the minute we are aiming to sign on for the season on in April and we are planning some "Taster" Sessions for new members in May and June. Please watch out for the banners and adverts with details.

We have some big plans in the pipeline and all goes well we will have some exciting news later in the year.

We have plans for three Mens teams and one Ladies competing in the Ladies East Beds League as well as other competitions.

We will be running Friendlies against local teams as well (all dependant of Covid restrictions of course).

The way the Pandemic and vaccinations are going we are all hopeful of some exciting and friendly games of bowls.

If you would like to try our lovely game please contact the club, we have two qualified coaches that can introduce you to the game if you have not tried it before, and we have some competitive games for those that have played before.

Thanks

Ivan Williamson

President Ivan Wiliamson (right) and Vice Captain Martyn Read (Right) presenting Life Membership Awards to John Stocking, Sylvia Williamson and Diane Ingle.

Merry Christmas from the President of Ampthill Bowls Club

What a funny old Year this has been, Her Majesty the Queen had a Annus Horriblus a couple of years ago but the whole world has a Year that will not be forgotten and I do not think I will try to put a description of it on here.

To say that all we can do is look forward is putting it lightly, we did manage to get some socially distant bowls in thanks to our members Mike Wade and Nick Keene stepping up and organising a Ladder and Pairs competition. Thanks to the two competitions and our then Vice Captain stepping up to the plate when our Captain Colin Beal fell ill, Martyn Read hosting other clubs (when we were allowed) we did have some competitive bowls.

Our get well soon wishes go to Colin Beal for a speedy recovery from illness and also well wishes got to Jean Osbourne who is also recovering from injury suffered during the year, two of our senior players and members.

The whole membership can be proud of the fact that we had a record number of new members join us during the year and the people involved deserve a pat on the back for welcoming the potential new members on our "taster sessions" that were so successful.

We sadly said goodbye to Mary Whitbread, June Flyn and Mick Newman this year, we have been unable to say our goodbyes properly with a drink at the bar this year but I hope we will soon be abl  to get together soon.

Congratulations go to Colin Beal, Dianne Ingle, John Stocking, Pearl Thompkins, Ray Outridge and Sylvia Williamson on the award of Life Membership in recognition of Years of dedication to Ampthill Bowls Club.

Our club has to look forward and with the help of the committee and our new Captains of Martyn Read and Patsy Dobson I am looking forward to the new year and some new challenges. We have some idea's that will hopefully see more use for the clubhouse in the winter months and some improvements to the clubhouse itself to make more socials possible.

I would like to see the club go forward from strength to strength, we have a fantastic club and it would be nice to raise the profile of the club in the town and enjoy everything that comes with that.

Enough from me I would just like to say thank you to the committee, the Green keepers and the membership. I would especially like to thank Sandra Read for doing a fantastic job as Secretary .

I wish you all a Happy Christmas and I am sure we are ALL looking forward to a better year next year.

Thank you

Ivan Williamson

SEASON HAS ENDED BUT WORK CONTINUES ...

Even though the season has ended work continues on the green to ensure it is prepared for the winter and in good shape for the new season. It has been scarified and double cut and is ready for its' final spike before it's put to bed for the New Year. Many thanks to our Greenkeeping Team for continuing to do a great job ...

Wall of Rememberence ...

We are so pleased to be able to start a Wall of Rememberence for Members this year..  Our President has installed an individual plaque for those members that have passed away this year on the main wall of the Club Building.

Presidents Day ...

Unfortunately, due to the current Covid restrictions we were unable to hold the Presidents Day as we normally do, with finals being played and a social event after.  Despite this the weekend went ahead and started with the Semi finals of the Drawn Pairs being played on the Saturday, the final being played on Sunday.  The weather was kind, the matches were played with virtually no spectators, however the finalists had a good game. Well done to the winners Terry Fynch and Trish Miller and the Runners Up Mike Wade and Bernard Goodwin.

The Ladder competition also came to an end with the overall winner being Martyn Read.

This year the Committee also introduced a 'Club Person of the Year' Award, to be presented to someone who has made an outstanding contribution to the club.

The nominees for the Award are selected by the Committee (Committee members can't be chosen for the award), and for this year Martyn Read was unanimously selected for his significant contribution to coaching new members this year and also for the additional help he has provided in the maintenance of the grounds.

Congratulations to Martyn and thank you for all your support this year.

So despite it being a very difficult year for the Bowls Club with all external leaugues and competitions cancelled due to the Pandemic it turned out to be a very successful season, not only were the internal competitions a great success but we also managed to enrol 12 new members to the club with another two waiting in the side lines to join next year.  Well done to everyone who helped make the season a very enjoyable and successful one.

Another Good Win for Ampthill ...

A most enjoyable afternoon playing a friendly game of bowls with Stewartby Bowls Club members in the glorious sunshine in the lovely setting of our Bowls Club in the middle of Ampthill..  The final score was 55-42 to Ampthill, out of the three rinks Ampthill won two.  Well done to Patsy Dobson and Nicollete Wade for playing some great woods on the last ends.

The Results for the Ladder are in ...

The 2020 COVID Ladder has now finished and hopefully everyone enjoyed the friendly competitive element in a rather strange season.

Bowls legend David Bryant has sadly died ...

We were saddened to learn of the passing of the man regarded by many as the greatest lawn bowler of all time, David J. Bryant CBE, at the age of 88.  David won five Commonwealth Games gold medals, eleven World Outdoor Bowls Championship medals and nine titles at the World Indoor Championships during an illustrious career.  He was widely recognisable as the face of bowls and was renowned for using a tobacco pipe whilst playing. He was awarded the MBE and then CBE for services to lawn bowls.

David claimed his first Commonwealth Games successes at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia, where he secured Gold in both the singles and fours. He went on to claim singles gold in 1970, 1974 and 1978.

He won the inaugural World Outdoor singles title at Kyeemagh, Australia, in 1966 and went on to win a further four gold medals at the World Outdoor Championships (two singles, one triples and one team), securing eleven medals in total (five gold, three silver, three bronze) between 1966 and 1988.

At the World Indoor Championships, David won no fewer than nine World Championships – three singles and six pairs titles with Tony Allcock OBE.

He also helped his county, Somerset, win the Middleton Cup on numerous occasions, as well as being crowned National Champion on 16 further occasions:

  • National Singles – 1960, 1966, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975
  • National Pairs – 1965, 1969, 1970
  • National Triples – 1966, 1977, 1985
  • National Fours – 1957, 1968, 1969, 1971

We send our condolences to his family and friends.

Why not give bowls a try this summer (see article below) and join us at our friendly club for a 1 hour Taster Session.  Find out why bowls is called the sport for all ages.  Sunday 9 August, 10am - 1pm and Wednesday 26 August, 5pm - 8pm.  Due to the current Covid-19 restrictions Booking is ESSENTIAL.

Bowls listed as one of the top 10 things to do this summer...

The BBC has listed Bowls as one of the top 10 things to do this summer http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53417675?fbclid=IwAR2jXwhq52qJ5bHsO32Ryl6sqcgkBmIVQvZmQ1nNSviYiRdw-3onOsPWH5k

Bowls Ladder for Members ...

The Bowls ladder is proving to be very successful with a good number of members taking part. The names of those who want to play in the competition were put in a hat and drawn out to create the ladder.  Members can challenge three people above their position on the ladder.  The aim is to climb the ladder by winning your games until you reach the top.  Once at the top you then have to wait to be challenged by those below you. All members are enjoying the opportuniy to play some competitive bowls this season which they haven't been able to do due to the Covid-19 regulations.

Coaching sessions available for new and existing members...

We are pleased to announce that we now have two qualified Bowls Coaches as members of the Club.  Ivan Williamson and Martyn Read have successfully passed their Level 1 Coaching qualification.  Coaching is available to new and existing members.  If you are interested in booking a session please do contact Martyn or Ivan via the form on the Contact Us page.

Re-opening of the Club...

The social side of bowls is an important part of the success of the club but due to the Covid-19 restrictions they have had to be put aside for a while.  However as lockdown regulations are slowly but surely being lowered we are currently trying to work out a plan of action that will enable us to open the club facility whilst still adhereing to the current regulations and social distancing rules.

Welcome to new members...

We are very pleased to welcome six new members this month despite the difficulties we have had to contend with.  All six have had four very successful coaching sessions and have already started to play, with several of them also joining the Bowls Ladder competition currently in process.  I am sure they will enjoy the beautiful surroundings that our club is lucky enough to have around its' perimieter aswell as the game itself, and existing members will make them welcome to the club.

And we are off...

We have finally been able to return to the wonderful game of bowls.  Members were able to start playing a couple of weeks ago and the use of the rinks has steadily been increasing.  The new booking system is working well and the Covid-19 health and safety rules have been adhered to as outlined in the new Rules.

As all the normal competitions have been cancelled a new internal 'Bowls Ladder' comp has been introduced to help instil a bit of healthy competion amongst members.  This has encouraged a few more bowlers to come forth and take on the challenge.

All in all it has been a successful opening and members are now looking forward to the next step in  widening the lockdown restrictions and being able to open the club house.

21/6/2020

We are re-opening...

We are very pleased to announce that we will be opening our gates on 1 June - existing members will be able to play singles against another member as long as they adhere to the strict social distancing and Health and Safety Rules that we have put in place.  All rinks will need to be booked (members will have received information individually on how to do this) as we are only allowed to have 6 members on the site at one time.  We therefore ask that members do not turn up at the club ad hoc.

If you are not yet a member and are interested in joining the club please use the contact form on the 'Contact Us' page or email us at enquiries@ampthillbowlsclub.com providing your telephone number so that we can call you back..  Coaching sessions are available for new and existing members and again if you are interested in these please do email us.

Working towards opening soon ...

With the news from Bowls England that with conditions in place we can start bowling (of sorts), the club is trying to put safe practices in place to allow our members to roll up soon. The Green staff are getting the green ready and we are all looking forward to playing our lovely game again

We salute you ...

Sadly we are unable to progress with the plans we had to celebrate VE day at the club, however the flags can still be raised in rememberance and commemorating the day the Allies formally accepted the uncoditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany. We will remember ...

We are ready and waiting ...

Despite the Bowls season being cancelled due to the onging Covid-19 situation work has continued on the bowls green to ensure it is ready for when we can play bowls again.  Our Greenkeeper, Goff Holmes and his merry band of volunteer helpers have been busy seeding, mowing, slitting and watering the green and it is looking very good.  Further work has been carried out around the ground, trimming the shrubs, weeding between the paving stones and washing of  and cleaning of windows, facias and gutterings.  We are ready and waiting .....

2020 Season Cancelled ....

Unfortunately due to the ongoing situation with the Coronavirus and guidelines given by Bowls England the 2020 Bowls season has been cancelled.

Whilst the social distancing regulations remain in situe the club and greens will be closed.  We will of course continue to monitor the situation and post any updates on the website.

In the meantime, stay safe, stay healthy and if you are able to stay at home.

Signing on and Open Days ...

Signing-on day, 5 April 2-4pm

Open Days - Sunday 3rd May 2-4pm, Wednesday 10th June 6-9pm, or Thursday 8th July 6-9pm

Sad News ...

It is with great sadness that one of our member, Mary Whitbread, passed away on 2 March, our thoughts go to all her family.

It's Coming Home ....

Ampthill Captain with the Cup

Final end Tomkins Cup Feb 2020

Ampthill were successful in winning the Tomkins Cup again this year. It is always a pleasure playing our friends from our neighbouring clubs in Maulden and Flitwick in this annual competition, held at Bedford Borough BC. (Thanks to them for hosting it too.)

We look forward to playing you all in our annual outdoor series of 3 matches later in the year too.

We all know it isn’t just about winning, but playing the game and having a bit of banter.

WELL DONE ALL...

Christmas Festivities and a BIG THANK YOU.....

On Sunday the 15th December we held a Christmas Drinks Afternoon.

The afternoon was well attended and the fun started with a presentation to two valued members of Ampthill Bowls Club for their services to the club over many years.

Colin Lambourne (on the right of the photo below) has served as the Green Keeper for 30 years, but he has decided it is time to hand over the reigns to Goff Holmes (his long suffering apprentice!) at the end of this our Centenary year.

Colin will continue helping the club behind the Bar and advising Goff on the Green.  Colin was presented with a gift to recognise all the hard work and valued contribution throughout the years.

John Stocking (on the left of the photo above) has been President for the past 9 years, he received a gift from the club to recognise the continued good work and valued contribution to the club.

Thank you to all the people that attended and we hope you enjoyed the event to celebrate with Colin and John.

We wish you All a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, we look forward to the spring and signing on day in April (Date to be confirmed) at the Club.

Volunteering at Christmas....

Once again this year members of the Club assisted Flitvale Rotary Club with their Tesco collection in December.  Several of our members opted to play Santa popping up from the Chimney, which they thoroughly enjoyed.  Volunteers were invited to a celebration and Thank You meal at Poplars Garden Centre      , where they received £100 donation towards their club/charity.  We hope to continue our support next year.

AGM Report

The AGM was very well attended and thank you to all those who did attend, The minutes are being compiled as we speak and we hope to have them available to members soon.

We have a few changes to report President for this year is Ivan Williamson and Vice President Tom Tink. A few changes on committee and we have a social committee this year also, we therefore hope to hold more socials in the summer season.

The Club would like to thank John Stocking for his work as President over the past 9 years, he has made a valuable contribution to the club including much updating of the club facilities, including the bar and Mens changing rooms with his building and decorating skills.

Ampthill & District Local History Society’s monthly lecture on Monday 2 Dec is about Sir Anthony Wingfield’s zoo.....

Sir Anthony was a founding member and the first President of our Club. This will be a fascinating insight into the history behind the llama on our Club’s badge. The talk is by Janet Tuckett and it starts at 7:45pm in the meeting room at Flitwick Library.  Cost is £3 (on the door) for non-members. Park in Tescos So they can anticipate numbers, please let Alan Plomb know if anyone intends to go. If anyone wants further info about this event or the History Society, contact Alan Plom, or look on their website: www.adalhs.org.uk

Where did that go....

Can you believe we have come to the end of the season already, it only seems like last week that the season started!  This, our Centenary year, has seen some highs and lows; we have lost several very well respected and long standing members/friends along the way, their absence remains with us and our thoughts are often of them and the times we had with them at the club.  We have had some wonderful Centenary matches, and memorable quiz’s and BBQ’s as well as having a successful season in some of the competitions, and can boast having three of the best Ladies bowlers in Bedfordshire (see the Ladies Captains comments below).  We have enlisted several new members and now have two qualified coaches, we have a new website and Newsletter, so all in all I think it has been a great season.  Well done to all!  On a more personal note, thank you for your kind comments on the Website & Newsletters.  If you have any suggestions on how the Website/Newsletter can improve please do let me know. Of course both of these rely on all members passing on information/photos/results etc, without members input it is difficult to keep to-to-date. So if you do have any news items/results/photos etc that you feel might be appropriate they will be gratefully received.

Successful Presentation Evening...

The Club held its' Annual Presentation Evening on Friday 4 October 2019.  For the first time the Presentation was held at the Bowls Club and what a success it was.  A selection of homemade food was served and enjoyed by all, there was a quiz or two and of course the obligatory Raffle and plenty of banter which made it a very enjoyable evening.  Competition winners were presented with their trophies by the President John Stocking and Ladies Captain Sylvia Stocking.

A word from Martin Harris...

As Captain of Ampthill B. EBL team I would like to thank all the team for there efforts this season. Although we did beat all our adversaries around us at the bottom of Division 4 we were relegated on bowls difference.

Congratulations to the C team on their promotion, this means we should be the same Division next term. We can look forward to more home games.

Thanks again Martin Harris.

A Red breasted visitor ......

We had reports that a robin kept flying in and out of the Clubhouse during one of our recent home games?

It had been nesting above the door to the Gents Changing Room, and we couldn’t understand why it was bringing grubs into the Clubhouse chirping and looking around.

It wasn’t until later in the day that one of our members found this little fledgeling cowering behind glasses on the shelf in the Bar (thankfully sober!!).

The frightened little robin was lifted out and it flew away (erratically) into the hedge..... we were
worried as we couldn’t find it after, and the parent didn’t either .... it was still hanging around the Clubhouse.

However we are pleased to report that they were reunited next day and Mother (or Father?) and Baby are doing fine!

A right royal visit ...

Sunday Express, 21 July - sadly we weren't graced with a visit by Megan or the queen during our visit to this beautiful bowling green on the 10th August!

We are off to Windsor Great Park ....

On Saturday 10 August 2019 we are travelling to Windsor Great Park to play a special Centenary match against the Royal Household Bowls Club.  We are hoping to re-create the photo taken in 1930, when the Captain would have been J Teasdale and the Vice Captain J E Hedges ....

Thank you from Bowls England President Hazel Marke

Dear John

Just a quick note to say a huge thank you for the wonderful day enjoyed by myself and all the Bowls England Players. It was a very special occasion and we were so grateful to be able to celebrate your Centenary with you and your members.

I am most grateful to you and ask that you also pass on my thanks to your Committee and members involved in organising your special day. These events take a great deal of arranging and it is really appreciated.

My personal thanks to you for the bottle of wine which I will enjoy and drink a toast to your good health. My thanks also for the beautiful glass and scratch card, unfortunately I can't share my winnings on this occasion as nothing matched.

I am most grateful to you and ask that you also pass on my thanks to your Committee and members involved in organising your special day. These events take a great deal of arranging and it is really appreciated.

Lastly, my thanks go to the ladies who provided the delicious buffet and after match meal.

I have attached the poem I produced for your day and hope you liked it, my starting point being the history of your wonderful club.

May I wish you all a successful season and hope that the rest of your centenary goes well.

Very best wishes

Hazel

Bowls England President.

Ampthill BC (Centenary) - Penned by Hazel Marke Bowls England President 2019

Thank you for inviting us to your Centenary day

It’s really great to be able to come and play

The sun is shining, oh what a joy

And your green is great, so you mustn’t be coy.

A century ago the club took shape

A far cry from its original landscape

Land owned by Lord Wingfield I understand was given

So, his exotic animals away were driven

Camels, zebras, ostrich and llamas to name but a few

Are now all at home in Whipsnade zoo.

The new green was admired by visiting teams

Skilfully laid lawns, ideal surrounds, oh what a dream

With a membership of just 45 they played so well

With nine successive wins the club certainly did excel.

Then in the 1930’s the green was extended

Four rinks increased to six, this was always intended

Maintained by the members who work so hard

A sight for all to see, you have my regard.

So, we celebrate today, half way through your year

With so much support, you have no fear

Bowls England’s so proud and with good reason

We all wish you well for the rest of the season.

My thanks to the workers here at the club

For serving up with such wonderful grub

Without these workers, where would we be?

Not able to have, even a cup of tea

So, I would really like to shout aloud

Ampthill Bowls Club you’ve done us proud

A visit from Bowls England...

Beds Times and Citizen article – 11 July 2019

A celebration match to mark the 100th anniversary of the club will take place at 1.30 today (Thursday 11 July 2019).

President Hazel Marke, of Alton Social BC in Hampshire, will bring a 24 strong Bowls England side to the club in Brinsmade Road, Ampthill, to contest a six-rink mixed feature.

The Bowls England side will consist of members of the current Bowls England Presidential team, including senior vice-president Paul Robinson (Hampshire) and junior vice-president Terri Keen (Buckinghamshire).

Marke said: “I am really looking forward to bringing a Bowls England representative side to Ampthill to mark the club’s 100th anniversary. “A celebration match against a Bowls England representative side is an idea way for a club to celebrate their special occasion in style.

“We hope our visit will leave a lasting impression on the club and ensure many new friendships are made both on and off the green.”

John Stocking, president of Ampthill BC, said: “The club is delighted that Bowls England will help s to enjoy our special anniversary with a celebration match.

“We look forward to welcoming president Hazel and her team to Ampthill and hope they relish the occasion as much as we will.”

The club will be presented with a Bowls England pennant to celebrate the occasion, while the best performing rinks for both sides will be awarded a commemorative spoon.

Success all round ...

A very big well done to Ivan and his team for the impressive display at the Ampthill Gala Day.

It was very impressive and attracted quite a few visitors with the possibility that some visitors may well want to join up. Bravo!!

Whilst that activity was taking place, the Club was performing in Round 2 of the Pell Shield, which resulted in a resounding win. Well done to you all and good luck in the next round.

Ampthill Gala Day ...

Ampthill Gala Day follows a great two nights of Music in Ampthill this weekend(5-7 July) with AmptRocks on the Friday and Ampthill Proms on the Saturday.  The music theme continues on Sunday with several acts on in the three stages.  In additional there is a fair for the children, games and events on the cricket pitch and many stall holders dotted around.  It is a fantastic weekend for Ampthill and for the first time this year we are having a stall.  Not only will you be able to have a chat with some of a our members about the club and the game but you will also be able to try your hand at bowls.  We are very excited at being part of this wonderful weekend event in Ampthill.

Successful evening ...

We were very pleased to host an evening of bowls with Ampthill Business Chamber and members of the Council, including our latest recruit the Mayor of Ampthill on Thursday 27 June.  This has become a regular event at the club with everyone looking forward to a friendly and fun evening.  The sun shone for us all, the buffet was very nice and the game of bowls was great fun.  A big thank you to all that organised the event and we look forward to a re-match next year.

Congratulations ......

We are pleased to announce that we now have two qualified Bowls Coaches as members of the Club.  Ivan Williamson and Martyn Read have successfully passed their Level 1 Coaching qualification and are already offering coaching to new members of the club.  Well done to you both!  Coaching is available to new and existing members.  If you are interested in booking a session please do contact Martyn or Ivan.

A visit from Windsor Great Park Tourists Bowls Club to help celebrate our Centenary .....

Our visitors arrived at 12.15  after visiting Wrest Park in Silsoe, they had a Buffet lunch prepared by Jean, Patsy Diane and Diane l.  Some of the team then had a tour round the Kings Arms Gardens with Pauline and Sylvia, which helped walk the lunch off before starting the match.

We started the Match at 2.00pm in sunny weather and had an enjoyable afternoon Bowling.  The weather was very kind to us which made it even more pleasant.  Glen and Hayley sold Raffle Tickets during the refreshment break half way throug the game.

At the end of the match we retired to the Club House for the presentations and the raffle  and a drink or two.  The Windsor Great Tourist Bowlers seemed to enjoy themsleves and merrily sang their song before departing.

After our visitors departed the Ampthill Team and family members had a tasty BBQ provided by Ivan and took part in a quiz very ably compared by Colin our Team Captain.

Our top rink was Val Bushnall, Mike Wade, Martyn Read and Goff Holmes.

Many thanks to those who served at the Bar during the day and every one who helped to make it a nice day and evening.

A Sad Farewell to one of our own ...

Yesterday (31/5/2019) we said goodbye to Merv Williamson - a well-respected and good friend of many people in Ampthill (and way beyond). The packed St. Andrews Church heard an amusing personal tribute by Rev Trodden who gave some examples of Merv’s sense of humour and loyal duty to the church. This included dealing with the plumbing and heating in the church and rectory - a service he provided to many homes in the Town. In a moving tribute by Paul Andrews on behalf of Ampthill Bowls Club, we heard how Merv was also a loyal member and ‘doer’ for the Club for 27 years. Always a popular skip with his team mates and the ‘opposition’ - many Clubs were represented at his funeral too. He played his last game just a couple of months ago and in his honour, the Club’s Centenary display is still in the Ampthill Micro Museum (above Ampthill Fireplaces), for just a few more days.  Sadly Merv won’t be playing in any of our Special Centenary matches this year. He would have enjoyed these special social occasions so much, but he will be with us in spirit. [Probably a double whisky!] Our thoughts are with Sylv and their family (including his nephew and fellow bowler Ivan Williamson ). RIP Merv.

We are through to Quarter Finals of the County Fours .....

Well done to I Burnage (skip), I Williamson (lead), C Lambourne (2), and Captain G Holmes (3), who went through to the Quarter Finals of the County Fours Competition. To be played on Fathers Day 16th June Venue tbc.

Sad News ...

Very sadly Merv Williamson, a long standing and valued member of Ampthill Bowls Club sadly passed away on 9 May 2019 surrounded by his family.  All at the club and all who knew him send their deepest condolences to his wife and family. Merv will be greatly missed, a true gentleman.  Aswell as playing bowls for Ampthill his contribution to the up-keep and maintenance of the club was huge and something he was passionate about (you either did it Merv's way or the wrong way!! ps just ask Colin Beal!).

The funeral will take place on Friday, 31st May 2:30pm at St Andrews Church, Ampthill and the wake after at Wingfield Club Ampthill.

BOWLS ENGLAND URGES PLAYERS TO STAY ‘SUN SAFE’ THIS SUMMER

Stay safe in the sun this summer – that’s the message from Bowls England as clubs across the country open their doors for the start of the 2019 season.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with a particularly sharp rise in the number of cases since the 1970s.

Sports and hobbies that see people outside in the sun tend to increase the risk of excessive sun exposure, which can cause premature skin ageing, sun damage and skin cancer.

The good news is that skin cancer is largely preventable, and with proper practices can be detected early and successfully treated.

Tony Allcock MBE, Bowls England Chief Executive, said: “A typical British summer doesn’t always give us the weather and glorious sunshine that perhaps we’d hope for. It can therefore be easy to overlook the need for sun protection in England. If you’re going to be outside playing bowls this summer, it’s important to remember to protect yourself from the sun. In an ideal world, you should avoid being outside between 11am and 3pm on days when the UV forecast is high. If that’s not feasible, then make sure you have plenty of sun protection.”

The British Association of Dermatologists, which will run its annual Sun Awareness Week from 6th to 12th May, advises making use of shade and protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses, with sunscreen used to supplement this. It advises choosing one with an SPF 30 or above, with a minimum 4-star UVA protection rating.

Although prevention is better than a cure, knowing how to spot signs of skin cancer is essential for effective treatment. The best way to check for skin cancer is to carry out regular skin examinations, ideally once a month. Early detection can help to reduce the risk of developing a larger, more serious skin cancer that may need extensive surgery or treatment.

The British Association of Dermatologists advises that you should be looking for:

• New skin lumps, spots, ulcers, scaly patches or moles that weren’t there before
• Marks (including moles) on the skin that have changed shape, colour, texture or size
• Sores that do not heal
• Any areas on the skin that are itchy, painful or bleed

If there are moles that you want to keep an eye on then it’s a good idea to take a picture of them, preferably with something, such as a coin, for scale. This will be a good reference point so that you can easily tell if there have been any changes. If in doubt, get it checked out by your GP.

Ampthill Business Chamber Quiz Night

The Bowls club entered 3 teams into the Ampthill Business Chamber Quiz night on 2 May at the Wingfield Club.  It was a fun night and indeed a very successful one as we came first and second!  Many thanks to the Chamber for hosting the evening and inviting us.  The winning team received £100 but they donated £40 back to the Chamber to give to their nominated cause which was the Redborne School Young Enterprise programme.  How would you have done (without using google!), here are three of the questions:

Who was Desmond Deckers backing band in the 70's?

Who won the Olympic Mens Figure Skating Gold Medal in 1980?

Which country, apart from South Africa, has Afrikaans as there first language?

And we are off.....

We played our first match of the season on Saturday 20 April, and the first in our 100th year.  Whilst we didn't win the match against Olney we did have these fabulous aerial photos taken:

Roll up, Roll Up .......

The new season is about to start, come down to the club on 6th April to try your hand at bowls and see for yourself how enjoyable the game can be.  Existing members will be on hand to help explain the game and answer any questions you might have.  The club will be open from 2pm onwards and the bar will also be open.

The 6th April is also signing up day for existing members to renew their membership to the club.

We are now exhibiting at Ampthill Micro Museum

We are pleased to announce that the Ampthill Bowls Centenary exhibition is now open for viewing at the Ampthill Micro Museum, which is located above the 'Ampthill Fireplaces' shop in Ampthill Town Centre. We would like to extend our thanks to Alan Plom, one of our Club members, for putting such an informative exhibtiion together. The exhibition will be on show for a month.

Hot News: We are through to the Indoor County Triples Final

Well done to Les Bunn, Terry Lynch and Goff Holmes for reaching the Indoor County Final.  We look forward to you bringing the Cup home to Ampthill Bowls Club.  Wishing you every success and good luck with your games.

Ampthill Bowls Club bring home the Tompkins Cup!

Ampthill won our annual ‘Tri-Club’ indoor competition against Maulden and Flitwick, held on Saturday 23 February at Bedford Borough BC.  Played as ever with good spirit, friendly local rivalry (and  plenty of inter-Team banter!) a good time was had by all.

Last year’s winning Captain Steve Jennings (Maulden) hands over the trophy to Ampthill Skip Colin Beal and Colin making his speech.
