Our weekly Thursday Evening Social Cup just got harder as the Youth team bring their skills to the competition.
Even the birds want a go!
Today we opened the doors of our club at the start of the season, inviting the local community to come along, meet our members and try out bowls.
On a beautiful sunny Sunday we had a fantastic turn out for our Open Day. Many people new to Bowls came along to give it a go, with a number signing up to Full membership immediately.
Some people were not bowling, but came along to sign up for a Social membership that allows them to come along to the many social events we hold at the clubhouse.
It was great to see so many young people turn up and take part in bowling. Our Youth Academy coaches were on hand to explain the game and help them to have a go.
First match of the season is underway today Saturday 18th April 2pm, playing Olney at our club. The Ampthill team will be wearing their new Navy trousers having moved away from the old grey and white uniform.
The green team have down a fabulous job all through the winter months to enable a glorious healthy bowling green in our beautiful surrounds overlooking the KIngs Arm Gardens.
It remained a fabulous sunny afternoon of Bowling for our first friendly match against Olney, resulting in Ampthill starting the season with our first WIN!
Well done everyone.
Granular fertiliser added and watered in. The green is looking fabulous and in rediness for the start of the Bowling Season in April.
Members get their kit together, and polish up their bowls in great anticipation for what promises to be another fabulous season of bowling.
Members: Goff, Martyn, Mike W, Gary B, Robert, John S, Ken, Peter H, Brendan and Ian M successfully tackled the bramble bushes.
A huge task that was required before any further ground works can take place. We are so fortunate to have members who really get stuck in and contribute to the many aspects involved in running a successful Bowls club.
Goff and his team keep a keen eye on the dreadful winter weather, and have seized the first opportunity in weeks to get out and undertake the much needed work required to keep our green in tip tip shape. As the weather starts to improve the Green Team get busier.
Winter green maintenance focuses on protecting the turf from disease and compaction by brushing off dew and worm casts, maintaining a cutting height of 8-10mm, and spiking 3–4 times to aid drainage. Key actions include keeping the surface free of debris, managing moss with iron, and applying covers to protect from heavy frost.
Surrounded by beautiful woodland makes our club a fabulous setting in which to enjoy bowls and outdoor socials in the summer season. However there is a lot of hard work involved in maintaining that beauty, and members start to get involved giving their time and skills.
Martyn and Gary have done a great job by clearing the brambles from the fence. We have to clear all the remaining brambles down the back of the changing rooms so in the next couple of weeks we will be putting a call out for more help. This has to happen to repair the guttering at the back of the club house.
Work continues on the Green including focusing on keeping the surface aerated and disease-free, reducing nitrogen fertilizer, applying potassium, phosphorus and iron, removing debris like leaves, brushing off dew, and spiking or aerating when conditions allow to improve airflow and drainage.
Well done to Goff and our dedicated Green Team.
